One of my buddies got pulled over doing 104 on thanksgiving. We live in VA, and after speaking to a lawyer it looks like he’s likely gonna spend a day in jail for every MPH over 90. First offense too. VA doesn't mess around, here’s an E46 cop car.

That’s almost 170 kilometres an hour. Jesus Christ. I know that people harp on Virginia being tough on speeders, but to be honest, he kind of has it coming.

Fast cop car to catch fast speeders.

Didn't you show him the Jalopnik article about speeding in VA?
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:08 |

Ugh, fuck that noise. VA is the worst when it comes to speeding, I got a bad ticket there when I was in college.

On the one hand, that seems a tad excessive.
On the other hand...104mph on a public road is a tad excessive.

I’m always surprised they never point that out in drivers ed here. Tough lesson.

On the freeway? Kind of reckless but not really the worst thing a person can do.
My wife was a traffic lawyer for a while and defended a guy who got busted doing 90-something down a 35 MPH city street. Miraculously, he didn’t get jail time, but that’s a real dick move to drive that fast on surface streets. At least on the freeway there’s not much chance of a pedestrian or cross traffic.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:17 |

Jeesh. What was being driven? 104 isnt even that fast considering people round me are already doing 80 and 85 down hill.

If you don’t mind me asking, what road was he on?

Or this one...

He was on I-66.

Not a good one.
Speeding in NOVA is always a bad idea, too many cops literally everywhere.

I'm not advocating going 100mph, but hitting 104 on an empty highway at 5 in the morning isn't the worst thing in the world. Certainly not worthy of 2 weeks in jail.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:28 |

On the freeway in a 65mph zone. I agree, he's dumb for doing it but seriously, hitting 100 on an empty highway isn't the craziest thing people do on public roads..
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:30 |
|
He was in a 335i. 104 is definitely fast.. But on an empty highway it isn't crazy enough for jail time.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:30 |

Yeah, it’s not really that bad if he did it with no one around. Like I said, it’s reckless but if the only one he’s endangering is himself then I’m not judging. I may or may not have driven at high speeds on empty freeways in the past, too.

Tell me about it, IMO drivers Ed was pretty easy back when i was in high school (and I was in one of the best counties in the country).
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:33 |

Lol, car enthusiasts in VA knew what was up waaaaay before that article.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:33 |

I think it’s pretty fair. What reason does someone have to be going 104 miles per hour? Doesn’t matter if the highway is empty or not, it’s a public access area. There’s still a potential for someone to get hurt.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:34 |

You’d get run off the road in SoCal if you’re not doing at least 10-15 over the speed limit. Is that where you are?
104 on a freeway with no traffic isn't really dangerous. I've done higher in a canyon before, so on an open freeway it doesn't seem that bad.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:42 |

No reason at all. I personally don’t think doing 104 in a 65 is deserving of jail time. 104 on the highway is excessive and stupid, but I think the $2500 fine he'll probably be hit with will be enough.
His lawyer joked that he could probably get him out of jail time easier if he had tried to break into someone’s house.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:48 |

Oh yeah, I rarely if ever take it over 80. Don’t want that reckless driving ticket.
Cops have been setting up lots of speed traps (really elaborate fucking traps too) around my neighborhood lately and it’s the most obnoxious thing. I got lucky and got a “warning” after a cop paced me doing about 43 in a 35.. Yeah.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:49 |

Pftttt, that’s dumb. On the GW Parkway, I’ve heard they nab people doing 7 over.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:54 |
|
It’s ridiculous. I totally think my friend should get a huge ticket and lots of points on his license for doing 104, but in NoVa speeding tickets are all about revenue.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 21:59 |
|
This is northern VA. Somewhat the same, people driving back from DC will sit around 70-75 (65 zone). Anything over 80 is a reckless driving ticket here. I usually sit with the cruise on 70ish and I’m constantly getting passed.
I don't think 104 on an empty freeway is gonna kill anyone. Yeah it was dumb but doing 80 in a 335i honestly feels like 55-60. I imagine 104 doesn't feel that crazy.

Setting aside any debate over the fairness of Virginia’s laws, at this point, is there anybody out there that isn’t fully aware that they will put in you jail for speeding? I mean, getting mad at that is a bit like a lifelong smoker acting surprised that his cigarettes gave him lung cancer.
Virginia has draconian speeding penalties, so unless and until those are changed, don’t speed in Virginia.

Used to live in DC - 66 is often a mess, and heavily policed. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but VA, CT, and DC the states where you can’t use a radar detector?
![]() 12/02/2015 at 22:23 |
|
Yup, DC and VA are no detector zones. Supposedly the local Porsche crowd like to run hidden laser jammers to beat it.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 22:27 |

Driving in VA, I recall that my Passport saved me more than once when it was merely sitting on the passenger seat. It wasn’t a Valentine 1, but it saved me a few thousand bucks.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 22:36 |
|
Didn’t one of the authors on the fp have to spend a day or two in jail for doing the same thing?
![]() 12/02/2015 at 22:38 |
|
I haven’t gotten a ticket yet, but local speed traps have been getting more and more absurd lately. A cop “paced me” doing 43 in a 35 and gave me a warning as if he was doing me a favor.. A properly installed hidden laser jammer/detector may be in my future.

Yeah, very famous article in VA haha.

That honestly wouldn’t surprise me :p

My 90s era Passport went to a friend, so it’s not even an option. When I rent cars, I just keep up with the traffic and try to blend in. Chevy Volt, Volvo S40, Nissan Versa, Nissan Sentra, Prius, Civic ... none of these is noticeable. Next time I may splurge on a C Class.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 23:40 |
|
Get the c-class if you are in the DC area. We have about 3 million of them! I got one in Mars red so it would stand out a little more, yet I still see one or two just like mine every week.
![]() 12/02/2015 at 23:48 |
|
I am in Manhattan, but there are a couple outlets where you can rent a C-Class. Or an S5 - I’m not picky.
![]() 12/03/2015 at 00:00 |
|
Ohhhh now an S5 would be nice. Never driven one (or even an A5) but they look so good.
![]() 12/03/2015 at 01:09 |
|
There is a rental service where you deal directly with the owner here - there is, among other vehicles, an S2000 6M on it. There are other interesting cars as well. I’m a cheapskate, but I also want something interesting to drive once in a while.

Best road to speed on is Route 50 towards Annapolis. I’ve probably seen 7 cops in my two decades of riding on that road. Also hit some seriously bad speeds on it. One I’d never do again. It was faster than your friend.

Make sure he reigns himself in a bit otherwise it may not be the police taking care of him but one of these.

Is it relay rides? Also, you should totally go for the S2000! That would be a fun weekend if you could get out of the city.
![]() 12/03/2015 at 08:46 |

Route 50 in fairfax is the opposite, lots of cops but more importantly tons of traffic.

Relay Rides, for some reason, is now Turo. Whatever that means.
